MelaNailScan

Image Analysis Supporting Diagnosis of Nail Melanoma

MelaNailScan is a software that assists physicians in diagnosis by analysing images of the affected area (Dermoscopy images) shot with a digital camera. Unlike conventional diagnosis, MelaNailScan eliminates the need to remove the nail, therefore placing less burden on the patient.

Flow of Diagnosis

  1. Photograph the affected area

  2. Extract the image

  3. Analyse the image

  4. Diagnosis by a physician

PROBLEM

Simple and Minimally Invasive Diagnostic Method Has Long Been Awaited.

Type of Skin Cancer Arising from Nails

A dark brown streak appears along the longitudinal line of the nail and gradually widens. The color gradually darkens and becomes uneven. As the disease progresses, the nails may become cracked or deformed, and the melanin pigment may seep out of the nail.

For Diagnosis, Nails Had to be Removed.

In the past, it was difficult to determine whether a discoloration of the nail was a melanoma or not, and biopsy of the nail matrix was necessary for diagnosis. In many cases, the removed nail did not grow back, resulting in a heavy patient burden.

If not Detected Quickly Enough, the Finger could be Amputated.

If detected early, it can be cured with a partial resection. If detected late, the finger may have to be cut off, so early detection is important.

Solution of Challenges in Melanoma Diagnosis

Because nail melanoma is a rare disease, physicians have few opportunities to diagnose it; MelaNailScan provides objective DI values, compensating for differences in medical experience among physicians, standardizing treatment levels, and potentially contributing to the early detection of nail melanoma.

Challenges of Current AI Diagnosis

Currently, there is a trend toward employing AI technology to analyze images for diagnosis, but a recent study* suggests that AI's recognition ability in diagnosing nail melanoma is relatively poor.

Judgement Ability to Support Physician's Diagnosis

MelaNailScan identifies nail melanoma through an AI-free Differential Index (DI). Experiments comparing the diagnosis with a physician's image reading have proven that the diagnosis using MelaNailScan is more accurate.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is MelaNailScan?

MelaNailScan is diagnostic support software that analyzes nail images and assists in the differentiation of nail melanoma. It assists the physician's examination and supports decisions based on objective indicators.

What kind of inspection method does the system adopt?

The physician takes pictures of the affected area with a digital camera, and the software analyzes the images. The advantage of this system is that there is no need to remove the nail, and the evaluation can be performed while minimizing the physical burden on the patient.

What are the benefits of utilizing MelaNailScan?

MelaNailScan is expected to make it easier to compensate for differences in diagnostic experience among physicians, leading to a more uniform level of care, a reduction in missed early-stage melanomas, and avoidance of excessive pathological testing.
